Educational Guide: Prints of Historic Women of Rio Grande do Sul

Who were these women, and what do their stories reveal about the history and formation of Rio Grande do Sul?

The Educational Booklet Prints of Historic Women of Rio Grande do Sul was developed in conjunction with Panmela Castro’s exhibition A Chronicle of Non-Solitude, presented at Fundação Iberê Camargo. It invites readers to discover the lives of four Black women whose contributions shaped the social, political, and cultural history of Rio Grande do Sul: Iara Deodoro, Maria Lídia Magliani, Nega Lu, and Teresa Franco.

About the Educational Booklet

This Educational Guide was developed in conjunction with Panmela Castro’s exhibition A Chronicle of Non-Solitude at Fundação Iberê, through a collaboration between Fundação Iberê and Rede NAMI. The publication introduces four Black women from Rio Grande do Sul portrayed by Panmela Castro in a series of etchings created during her artist residency at the Foundation’s Printmaking Studio.

Their stories were featured in the exhibition, connecting past and present to show that non-solitude is also built through continuity, recognition, and collective memory. Through this Educational Guide, we invite readers to learn who these women were, how they shaped their communities, and the challenges they faced. The publication is free to access and can be used for school visits, guided educational activities, or independent study.
